We are thrilled to announce Darius Tandon, PhD has been appointed as Chief of the Division of Intervention Science in the Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS) at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Darius’ distinguished career centers on the development and testing of interventions aimed at reducing the burden of mental illness in families, particularly during the perinatal period and early childhood. His research is deeply embedded in community-based settings, with a focus on socio-economically disadvantaged and racial/ethnic minority populations.

Darius holds a PhD in Community Psychology and Prevention Research from the University of Illinois-Chicago and has made significant contributions to perinatal mental health research. A key highlight of his work is the Mothers and Babies program, a preventative intervention for perinatal depression. In 2019, his research led to Mothers and Babies being recognized by the United States Preventive Services Task Force as one of the top two most effective interventions for preventing perinatal depression. Furthermore, Mothers and Babies has been recognized as an “evidence-based” referral option for federally funded home visiting programs by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

As he steps into his new role at MSS, Darius is excited to amplify the innovative intervention science led by faculty in the division and collaborate with colleagues to enhance the translation of interventions into diverse community and clinical settings. "There are few departments across the United States based in medical schools that contain such a vibrant mix of social scientists as MSS," he says, reflecting on the department's unique environment and the opportunities ahead. Congratulations, Darius!
