We are pleased to welcome Berivan Ece, PhD, who joins the faculty of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS) as a Research Assistant Professor in the Division of Outcomes and Measurement Science.

Berivan holds a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from Koç University in Istanbul, Türkiye. She was previously a Postdoctoral Fellow in MSS (2022-2024).

Her research interests lie at the intersection of cognitive aging, cognitive development, memory, attention, decision-making, formation and retention of autobiographical memories, and the development and refinement of cognitive testing and measurement tools. At MSS, she has been working on two projects: Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) and Advancing Reliable Measurement in Cognitive Aging and Decision-making Ability (ARMCADA).

For ECHO, Berivan worked on remote validation of anthropometrics and cognition in the pediatric population. She worked in all stages of this study, from developing the research design and protocol to data analyses and manuscript writing. For ARMCADA, she participated in a comprehensive scoping review in which the team reviewed more than 16,000 records on decision-making assessment in adults aged 45 and over.

Working at MSS for the last two years has given Berivan the opportunity to become familiar with the team and their research quality. Berivan said:

“The MSS approach to health measurement, especially in cognition and behavioral science, provides a great context for advancing research in fields such as memory, attention, and decision-making. In addition, I had a chance to observe how the department values health equity and diverse populations in improving health outcomes. Being part of a scientific community like MSS is invaluable to my growth as a researcher.”

In her new role, she is most excited about new collaborations with faculty and upcoming projects that will add to her research interests and experience.  We look forward to the contributions Berivan will make in advancing equity, innovation, and impact in health, both through her research and as a valued member of our community. Welcome Berivan!
