Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility and Belonging (DEIAB)

Our Commitment

A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and belonging (DEIAB) is foundational to the mission of the Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS).

It allows us to advance inclusive excellence in our community, research and educational missions. We aspire to create and sustain a work environment that supports and promotes a culture of equity and belongingness.

The MSS IDEA Committee

The MSS Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Action (IDEA) Committee plays a pivotal role in advancing DEIAB initiatives within the department. It drives dynamic discourse and department-wide effort to continually expand MSS engagement with and action towards creating a more inclusive and representative scientific and professional community.

Leadership

Goals & Initiatives

The IDEA Committee’s goals and initiatives are shaped collaboratively by its members, with input from MSS colleagues and leadership. The committee's programs cover a broad spectrum of topics and are delivered through several formats. Some of the key initiatives include:

  • Seminars: These provide faculty, staff and trainees with best practices for conducting health equity research.
  • Trainings and Discussions: National DEIAB leaders are invited to share innovative frameworks and conduct training sessions during department meetings.
  • Experiential Events: Events such as Diversity Roundtables and the DEI in Media series foster open conversations and learning.

In addition to these programs, the IDEA Committee has been instrumental in articulating and implementing equitable processes across key departmental functions, such as faculty hiring. Our equitable hiring practices have set a benchmark for other departments. Nevertheless, we recognize that hiring is just the beginning, and we are committed to continually enhancing the culture of belonging within MSS.

Integration of DEIAB Into MSS Operations

DEIAB principles are integrated into all departmental operations. The IDEA co-chairs are vital members of the MSS Steering Committee, offering proactive input on programming and decisions. IDEA members also contribute significantly to strategic planning, communications and event planning, ensuring DEIAB values are woven into every aspect of our work.

Strategic Oversight

Liz Addington, PhD, serves as the MSS Director of DEIAB Implementation and is a member of the MSS Executive Committee. In this role, she provides strategic guidance and oversees the implementation of both university and departmental policies aimed at advancing DEIAB and fostering inclusive excellence within MSS.
